Abstract: newlineAbstract newline. newlineHydrogels are three dimensional network gels having high capacity to absorb water and retain their dimensional stability. They also possess degree of flexibility very similar to natural tissue. Hydrogels were the first biomaterials to be developed for human use. Hydrogel possess the property of swelling. Some hydrogels undergo continuous or discontinuous changes in swelling that are meditated by external stimuli such as changes in pH, temperature, ionic strength, solvent type, electric and magnetic strength, light and the presence of chelating species. They are considered as smart material due to its wide range of applications. Hydrogels containing functional groups as a part of their structure have tremendous potential applications. Owing to a large variety in chemical structure, hydrogels have been prepared for various applications in pharmaceutical and biomedical fields. Hydrogels have been used selective removal of some substances from the aqueous solution.. Antimicrobial activity of nanocomposite worked against E.Coli. Present investigations are focused on the synthesis of hydrogels based on gum tragacanth with monomer itaconic acid and maleic acid. Crosslinked hydrogels were made using microwave radiations. The resultant hydrogel with different property profiles and were evaluated for drug delivery and antimicrobial studies was observed. These hydrogels were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) etc.
