Grid computing is a new form of computing and data infrastructure much like the internet. A grid is formed by the contribution of resources form the providers located across different locations. The main goal of such an infrastructure realization is to collect smaller units of underutilized resources to be aggregated to form a massive virtual super computer. E-Science (or eScience) is a computationally intensive science that is carried out in highly distributed network environments, or science that uses immense data sets. Interoperability is an important issue, especially in Grid infrastructure that use multiple, heterogeneous Grid middleware. Monitoring such heterogeneous scenarios requires interoperability of the grid middleware islands for information services. In the present work, a survey of different middleware is done followed by an extensive survey of grid middleware interoperability initiatives worldwide. The majority of available interoperability projects connects two middlewares and provides simple resource redirection from one grid to the other. Four prominent and widely used middlewares namely Globus Tookit 2, Globus Toolkit 4, gLite and UNICORE are selected for the proposed interoperation. The Semantic module provides the intelligence in resource matchmaking and for automated resource direction based on user request and resource availability across multiple middlewares, by selecting the appropriate Middleware Access Driver (MAD). The present thesis discusses potential avenues in Grid for integrating heterogeneous grid middleware towards effective Grid Resource utilization from all the dimensions of middleware functionality. The proposed solution covers the aspects of resource information maintenance, intelligent match making, automated resource redirection with scheduling support in a heterogeneous middleware environment. Also, the architecture is extensible and can accommodate additional middlewares. newline newline newlineen_US
