The need for exploring new sources of fuels for existing engines newlineafter the oil crisis in the middle east in the mid 70s is greater than before newlineand the demand for fuel is increasing day by day Ethanol is looked upon as newlineone of the potential replacements for petroleum oil which can be used in newlineengines Engines have been developed to run on both petroleum and alcohol newlinebased fuels The use of ethanol based fuel has met with greater success in cars newlineand light commercial vehicles than in heavy vehicles newlineIndia is the fourth largest producer of ethanol in the world and the newlinesecond largest producer in Asia after China The country produces around 460 newlinemillion gallons of ethanol annually contributing approximately 4 to the newlineworlds total production Even though India produces such large quantities of newlineethanol it has the potential to produce an additional 700 million gallons per newlineyear Ethanol has been tested with gasoline diesel and other biofuels as newlineblend among which gasoline ethanol GASOHOL blend has been widely newlineused so far newline newline
