Abstract: | Aerobic exercise produces many acute cardiovascular and respiratory responses, and aerobic endurance training produces many chronic adaptations. This information can be particular value for developing the goals of a conditioning program and can provide a basis for clinical evaluation and the selection of parameters included in such an evaluation process. Anaerobic training generally results in fewer acute and chronic responses in the cardiovascular and respiratory systems although low-intensity, high-volume resistance exercise produces some responses that are similar to those with aerobic exercise. Aim: The purpose of the study was to find out the effect of aerobic and anaerobic training on selected pulmonary variables of untrained college men. To achieve this purpose of the study, forty five college untrained men students from St.Micheal College of engineering and technology, Kalayarkovil, Tamilnadu, India were selected as subjects, at random. Their age group ranged between 18 to 24 years. Experimental Design-Selection of Subjects: The study was formulated as pre and post-test random group design, in which forty five students were divided into three equal groups. The experimental group 1 (n=15 AT) underwent aerobic training in the form of jogging programme, the experimental group 2 (n=15 AN-AT) underwent anaerobic training in the form of sprint and control group 3 (n=15 CG) did not undergo any specific training. Selection of variables and tests: In this study, two different training were adopted as independent variables, i.e., aerobic and anaerobic training. The following pulmonary variables namely VO2 max, tidal volume, inspiratory reserve volume, expiratory reserve volume, vital capacity and inspiratory capacity, were selected as dependent variables. The VO2 max was tested by queen s college step test; the reaming parameters were tested with spirometer.
