Abstract: Real time operation of automated systems depend on effective functioning of the sensors and actuators, which are integral part of the control system. Development of precise control strategies requires models of transducers to be included as part of the system simulation. The IEEE and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have formulated an open universal standard called IEEE 1451 for Smart Transducer Interface with digital systems. Transducer Interface Module (TIM) , is used to develop network and vendor independent transducer interfaces. Incorporating IEEE compatible features into such ICs will enhance smartly configured re-usable systems. In this thesis, two such new control architectures are proposed. The first one is the Interconnected-TIM Control Architecture, where the controller TIM and TIM are independently developed enabling modularity. The second one is Integrated-TIM Control Architecture, which can serve as an application specific architecture. The features of second architecture namely integrated control architecture are worked out. It integrates the sensors and actuators to the controller itself. Complete data sheet for the system, sensor and controller are formed as Transducer Electronic Data Sheet (TEDS) compatible with IEEE standard. This type of architecture is most suited for specific application. Comparison of the proposed controller with conventional control structure with respect to hardware resources and performance is provided. To summarize, this thesis presents two new control architectures, which are compatible with IEEE 1451 standard and discusses the design issues related to the implementation of the proposed controllers. The architectures can be categorized as smart systems, and also have all the advantages of the IEEE 1451 standard. The smart system supports intelligence at each node and enables configuration of functional modules according to system/user requirements. Any change/update in system configuration is easily achieved by changing the contents of TEDS. newline newline
