Designing and implementing a new model of library web portal by using foss based architecture for online information service

Abstract

This research work deals with the designing and implementing of an effective and efficient library web portal integrating all kinds of library key services by using free and open source software and tools in a single platform and architecture. This attempts to demonstrate the integrated online library and information services by using the FOSS-based architecture and platform through web portal in media library as an application domain. The main objective of the present is work to design and implement a library web portal and provide integrating of all kind of library key services by using free and open source software and tools in single platform and architecture. In addition the system should be feasible and customizable by the library and information professionals. In this research work, we chose media library as an application domain and a case study have been done in the Media Lab, Jadavpur University and we try to give an idea of a model based approach of library web portal by using FOSS-based architecture and platform. The methodology includes the various steps like extensive study of present and existing library websites / web portals / digital libraries; choosing of an application domain; identifying the library key services for web based system; study the various types of free and open source software, tools and platform; installing the software packages; writing source code; performance testing of the system by sample users; integrating the interactive software with the system. In this research work, we use the LAMP (Linux Apache MySQL PHP/Perl) architecture for designing and implementing the library web portal. We got a clear overview of Linux operating system, PHP scripting language, Apache web server and MYSQL database management system. The entire code of the web pages have been written in HTML and PHP language. This work also shows how to integrate Wordpress blog software (Web 2.0 software) with the library web portal system for interactive service. As per consultation with previous literatures and
