Abstract: | Borate based glass systems have been prepared by conventional melt-quenching technique. newlineThree sets of borate based ternary and quaternary glasses were prepared doped with 1 newlinemol% of CuO having compositional formulae as 59B2O3-10K2O-(30-x)ZnO-xBaO-1CuO newline(x=0,6,12,18,24,30mol%),59B2O3-10K2O-(30-x)ZnO-xLi2O-1CuO(x=0,6,12,18,24,30 newlinemol%) and 59B2O3-10Na2O-(30-x)CdO-xZnO-1CuO (x = 0, 7.5, 15, 22.5, 30 mol%) . newlineThe physical properties of glass systems were studied and reported. The prepared newlineglass systems have been characterized using XRD, differential scanning calorimetry, FTIR, newlineRaman spectroscopy, Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) and Optical Absorption. newlineThe amorphous nature of the all sampled were confirmed by recorded XRD newlinepattern. The glass transition temperature (Tg), crystallization on set (To) and thermal newlinestability (and#916;T) of the glasses have been investigated and reported. It is concluded that newline59B2O3-10K2O-6ZnO-24 Li2O (BKZL5) glass system possesses the highest thermal newlinestability of 198 oC and it could be more suitable and potentially useful candidate material newlinefor drawing of optical fibers. newlineThe structural units of the synthesized glass systems have been investigated newlineand reported by using FTIR and Raman Spectra. From FTIR and Raman studies it is found newlinethat present glasses are composed of [BO4] and [BO3] units in newlinemetaborate, orthoborate, diborate groups. In the glass composition 59B2O3-10Na2O-(30- newlinex)CdO-xZnO-1CuO (0 and#8804; x and#8804; 30 mol%) only when x=0, 59B2O3-10Na2O-30CdO-1CuO newline[BNCZ1] glass observed onset crystallization temperature (TO) prominently with in newlinecorporation of ZnO content. This indicates that increase of ZnO in place of CdO has a newlinetendency to prevent crystallization. Thus ,present glasses are more thermally stable against newlinecrystallization. newlineThe bonding parameters of all the glasses have been calculated. In all the prepared newlineglasses the values of and#946;2 were found to be close to one and it suggests that out of plane and#61552;- newlinebonding is more ionic in nature and the magnitudes of all bonding parameters are newlinecomparable to those found fo |
