Abstract: | Urolithiasis is found to be a common problem in human beings worldwide and since long time the treatment for Urolithiasis comprising of natural plants is practiced in different parts of the world. Urolithiaiss although generally not fatal but it causes severe colic pain, bleading in urinary tract and complications of urinary tract and very rarely death may occur. This condition is more common in males (60%) and less in females (40%). Some repeatable cases also reported in pediatric patients (15%) within a span of 5 years. newlineThe conventional treatment for Urolithiasisincludes an urinary alkaliser, a diuretic, analgesic and/or antimicrobial agent. Surgery is also advised as an alternative. Various surgical procedures like Extra-corporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy, Ureteroscopy, Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy and Open surgery is practiced. Various types of kidney stones like Calcium oxalate. Calcium phosphate, cystine, uric acid stones, struvite stones are found, but among all types calcium oxalate (calculi) are common. If the stones are formed in urinary tract, the condition is called as Urolithiasis and if they are formed in nephrons, the condition is called as nephrolithiasis. newlineTraditionally in India, Ayurvedic practioners are using different plant sources for the treatment of lithiasis. There is a wide variety of medicinal plants used for the treatment and there is no scientific data documented for these plants. Hence some of these medicinal plants are categorized as controversial drugs in some Ayurvedic texts. As these medicinal plants lack scientific data for their biological activity, research is needed to substantiate their use. newlineReview of literature showed that Aerva lanata (L) tradionally known as Pashanabheda is used by Ayurvedic practioners to treat Urolithiasis in different parts of India. According to Dr. P. V Sharma Ayurvedic practioner, Bergenia ligulata is the best Pashanabheda plant, but due to its lack of availability Aerva lanata is the next alternative for Urolithiasis.
