Abstract: quotThe toxicoepidemiological surveillance of poisoning cases, survey of agrochemicals available in Udhagamandalam followed by preparation of identification aids and updation of the poison management protocol, assessment of healthcare expenditure on management of poisoning cases to the hospital and evidence based management of organophosphate poisoning and its economic impact on health care expenditure were the objectives of this study. newlineThe occurrence of poisoning, socio demographic characteristics and choice of agents used for poisoning were evaluated in retrospective epidemiological surveillance. A structured interview was performed in selected agrochemical outlet centers to collect the data. The outcome of the proposed treatment was analyzed by cost effective analysis and cost minimization analysis. An identification tool was prepared covering concise report of all the agrochemical products currently available in this area followed by the updation of poison management protocol. If proposed treatment pattern would have been adopted, the mean lengths of stay as well as the direct medical costs, direct nonmedical costs and indirect cost in the hospital were expected to decrease with a statistical significance. The population at high risk, identified in this study should be provided with enough psychological guidance to reduce the occurrence of poisoning. The determination of AchE levels is essential for the diagnosis and treatment prognosis monitoring in organophosphate poisoning management. The evidence based treatment may provide a better clinical and economic outcome for organophosphate poisoning patients. Thus, the cholinesterase measurement provision is highly recommended to the study hospital. newlinequot newline
