Abstract: The thesis entitled Development of analytical methods for the determination of pharmaceutically active compounds in commercial dosage forms is comprised of five chapters. First chapter describes a general introduction of the subject matter. The very relevant matters include: importance of drug analysis and its role in testing the medicine before it is made available to the public a note on drug impurity profiling a brief description of various analytical techniques and its applications in the quantitation of drug in pharmaceuticals and biological fluids a brief literature and chemical structures of the four drugs, i.e. Haloperidol, Doxepin Hydrochloride, Amitriptyline hydrochloride, Perindopril erbumine. an abundant and well-composed list of references is given at the end of the chapter taken from the world s leading scientific journals in the field. Second chapter describes spectrophotometric method for the determination of haloperidol in pharmaceutical preparations. The method is based on the formation of ion-pair complex between haloperidol and eriochrome black T at pH 1.85. The formed complex was extracted quantitatively into chloroform and measured at 510 nm. Infra red studies were performed to confirm the formation of ion-pair complex. Beer s law was obeyed in the concentration range of 2.0 - 9.0 and#956;g mL-1 with molar absorptivity of 2.67 × 104 L mol-1cm-1. The detection limit was found to be 0.18 and#956;g mL-1. Statistical comparison of the results of the proposed method with those of the reference method shows excellent agreement and indicates no significant difference in accuracy and precision. newlineThird chapter deals with the spectrofluorimetric determination of doxepin hydrochloride in commercial dosage forms. It is based on the formation of ion-pair complex between doxepin and alizarin red-S at pH 3.09. The ion pair complex was extracted in dichloromethane and the fluorescence intensity was measured at 560 nm after excitation at 490 nm. The optimum conditions for determination were also investigated.
