Achievement in English of Minority Students at Senior Secondary Level in Relation to Certain Socio Psychological Variables

Abstract

Since the dawn of civilization, some languages always got privilege over others. In the modern time English is the most privileged language of the world. It is the window of success in several ways. It is used as the medium of instruction and communication all over the world. The learning of this language opens vistas of knowledge. The students, who are not adequately trained in English language at schools, find it difficult to follow their peers in higher education. All the good and authentic study material in medical, engineering, general and social science subjects are available in English, giving advantage to the English knowing students over others. The knowledge and understanding of English language is the most important factor determining access to higher education, employment opportunities and social status. Poor knowledge of English language is a great barrier in getting admissions in premier educational institutions in India and abroad. Finding a good job is also very difficult without excellent command over English.
