Protocol solutions to detect malicious nodes for the design of cross layer intrusion detection system for mobile adhoc networks

Abstract

A mobile ad hoc network MANET is a self configuring infrastructure less network of mobile devices connected by wireless links Each mobile node operates not only as a host but also act as a router to forward the packets in the network Outstanding with autonomous lightweight and self configuring nature of MANET the technology become an attractive in a wide variety of implementations Due to distributed nature openness in network topology and absence of a centralized administration in the management MANET often suffer from attacks by malicious nodes Securing such network is more challenging task The ultimate goal of the security solutions for MANET is to provide security services such as authentication confidentiality integrity anonymity and availability to the mobile users The main objective of this research work is to identify security threats that an ad hoc network faces and to design the protocol solutions to detect the malicious nodes which may cause different types of attacks such as Black hole Gray hole Sink hole and Denial of Service These attacks can be efficiently detected by having cross layer architecture enriched for detecting the malicious nodes in the network
