His influence on Assamese poetry has been very great. His name is associated with the beginning of a new trend in Assamese poetry by successfully establishing a relationship with a variety of literature and culture of the world including the school of poetry called Imagism. Imagism was a movement in early 20th century Anglo-American poetry that favoured precision of imagery and clear, sharp language. The imagists rejected the sentimentality and discursiveness typical of much Romantic and Victorian poetry. Group publication of work under the imagist name appearing between 1914 and 1917 featured writing by many of the most significant figures in modernist poetry in English. Based in London, the imagists were drawn from Great Britain, Ireland and the United States. Imagism is also significant historically as the first organised modernist English language literary movement or group. newlineInstrumental in the formulation of imagist school of poetry, T. E. Hulme is said to propound the original the concept of imagism although Ezra Pound is often been attributed as the founder of the movement. Poems of Nilamoni Phukan, a renowned contemporary Assamese poet, are characterised by the use of concrete and suggestive images and economy of language.
