Wireless Sensor Networks WSNs can be employed in several application domains such as emergency and health care monitoring precision agriculture environment and disaster monitoring transportation monitoring e governance surveillance and military monitoring industrial automation and various location tracking systems It has been widely argued that the IP based network architecture was seldom suited for the resource constrained newlinedevices that are being embedded in the physical World Furthermore there is an emphasis on the need of an application gateway to communicate with the other systems or the wider Internet Imparting accessible intelligence to every tiny real world objects is feasible only by integrating Low power Lossy Networks LLNs with Internet thus making them smart objects Among the plethora of communication protocols for WSNs RPL newlineplays a major role being an IP complaint protocol having the capacity for connecting WSN to Internet and hence paving a path for the existence of Internet of Things IoT The contribution of Internet Engineering Task Force IETF and Routing over Low power and Lossy Networks ROLL working group in developing and standardizing this IPv6 routing protocol for LLN S is of great significance The security implementation for RPL is an optional feature left open to the researchers and industrialists thinking about the newlineburden over the RPL stack for a resource constrained environment newline newline
