dc.description.abstractCancer is a major health problem worldwide and posses an enormous economic burden It has accounted for 14 1 million new cases being diagnosed and mortality of 8 2 million in 2012 Lip oral cavity and pharynx cancers in men and cervical cancer in woman are the most common cancers responsible for cancer deaths among Indians Early detection and accurate diagnosis of the pathological changes can enable effective treatment Although histopathological study is regarded as the golden standard it is subjective hence research on complementary and alternative diagnostic modalities is under progress In this regard optical techniques are increasingly being explored and have shown to be promising for characterization of tissues at molecular and structural level Raman spectroscopy has been used for many years to probe the vibrational characteristics of various biological molecules to track the biochemical changes at cellular and tissue level However more light has to be thrown for deeper understanding of changes at molecular level and for better classification accuracy newline newline
