Geological investigations of coastal sediments indicate that prehistoric tsunamis and cyclone can be identified Their characterization has altered the knowledge of the past frequency and magnitude of events for different areas of the world Yet there have been relatively few geological studies of modern tsunamis with virtually no direct observations of the processes associated with tsunami sediment transport and deposition Laterally extensive sand sheets deposited by the 26th December 2004 Asian tsunami and recent cyclones such as Phailin odisha Thane cyclone and Rameshwaram cyclone provide a valuable modern analogue for comparison with washover deposits of unknown origin newlineThis study seeks to apply the geological method of paleotempestology to reconstruct past cyclone activities for east coast of India Landfalling cyclone may deposit distinct overwash sand layers in coastal sediments through storm surges and tidal overwash processes that can be dated to establish a chronology of past cyclone strikes Altogether made seventeen pits and two cores taken from TamilNadu coast and Odisha coast with sampling interval of 1 cm 2 cm newline newline
