Abstract: Grid resources are highly autonomous and diverse in nature with respect to their hardware and software configurations. However, due to the diverse nature of participating Grid resources, they are limited in functionality with respect to coordinating and managing the resources for application execution. This thesis discusses potential avenues in Grid for integrating Semantic Web technologies towards effective Grid Resource Management. Semantic web defines the concept of ontology with which relationship between two concepts of a particular domain shall be established. Semantic Grid paradigm is then evolved which makes use of expressive power of ontology concepts in description and discovery of Grid resources. This thesis highlights limitations observed in recent researches in this field and attempts to propose several approaches to realize Semantic Grid concepts under different scenarios and test them with conventional Grid scheduler for practical implementation in Grid. In this thesis, an approach is proposed and implemented to describe The thesis also investigates the advantage of integrating virtualization technology with Grid computing concepts and studies the overhead involved in aggregating information related to virtual resource management. It then extends the semantic component to support ontological representation of such information and discovery of potential computational Grid resources for virtual resource deployment. This component is integrated with CARE (Centre for Advanced Computing Research and Education) Resource Broker and tested. The thesis investigates interoperability issues in EU India Grid project and implements an approach that supports Grid resource information aggregation across Globus and gLite based Grid for cross job submission. Gridseed, a tool that offers gLite Grid elements in the form of virtual machines, has been used for creating gLite test bed and tested with Globus enabled Grid infrastructure to verify the interoperability. newline newline newline
