T newlineThe present investigation entitled, Biochemical evaluation of tartary buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum Gaertn.) genotypes was carried out in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, College of Basic Sciences, CSK Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya, Palampur during 2008-2010. The grain samples of thirteen tartary buckwheat varieties / genotypes were collected from Mountain Agriculture Research and Extension Centre (MAREC), Sangla of the University during 2008-2010 and samples of fresh leaves were harvested during the year 2009-2010. Mean values of moisture, fat, ash, crude fibre, carbohydrates, total soluble protein, methionine, tryptophan, in vitro protein digestibility, magnesium, calcium and zinc evaluated in the grains of tartary buckwheat genotypes during the three years of experimentation showed the range of variation from 10.3 - 11.5%, 1.9 - 2.5%, 1.8 - 2.3%, 7.1 - 7.9%, 63.8 - 67.4%, 9.8 - 11.3 %, 76.0 - 93.5 mg/g N, 68.2 - 78.0 mg/g N, 70.7-74.7 %, 194.5-216.5 mg/100g, 49.2-57.6 mg/100g and 2.6-3.2 mg/100g, respectively. Overall superior multipurpose genotypes were identified as Sangla-B-106 followed by Shimla-B-1, Sangla-B-118 and Sangla-B-1 in tartary buckwheat grains based on desirable quality attributes in descending order. In the fresh leaves of tartary buckwheat genotypes, significant variation in moisture, crude protein, fat, ash, crude fibre, carbohydrates, ascorbic acid, in vitro protein digestibility, magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc and phosphorus was noticed from 88.6 - 90.5 %, 21.6 - 24.2%, 2.6 -3.4%, 10.7 -11.9%, 11.1-12.9%, 36.1 - 38.9 %, 24.8 - 28.7 mg/100g, 59.1 -62.5 %, 269.8 - 280.4 mg/100g, 390.5 - 403.8 mg/100g, 35.3 - 40.6 mg/100g, 3.7 - 5.1 mg/100g and 829.4-859.8 mg/100g, in that order. Based on cumulative grading, Sangla-B-120 followed by Sangla-B-124, Sangla-B-118 and Sangla-B-121 emerged out best genotypes in buckwheat leaves. The rutin content evaluated in the leaves and grains of promising genotypes ranged from 0.98 -2.27% in leaves and 0.60-0.95 % in grains and its highest values was found in the leaves(2.27%) in the genotype Sangla-B-124. Thus, nutritionally superior tartary buckwheat genotypes for grains and leaves in individual quality trait(s) were found out for crop improvement purpose, however based on genotypic grading versatile genotypes were also identified to be useful in nutraceutical enrichment/ value addition purpose. newline newlineen_US
