Abstract: | The present study was done for studying the effect of first transition series elements stress responses of Escherichia coli. Sewage sample of Nag Nallah Nagpur was processed for isolation of Escherichia coli. In all twelve isolates could be obtained from this sample. newlineTwelve isolates were thoroughly examined. Except for certain minor differences in the size and shape of colonies or size and shape of the organism, all the isolates were matching more than 99% hence it seems that all of them are technically belonging to Escherichia coli. In our further studies we selected only one isolate namely EC7 and hereafter referred to as the test strain of Escherichia coli or newlineEC-Test. Similarly for comparison to reference strain the reference strain shall be referred to as EC-Reference ATCC 8739. newlineIn our study chromium, iron and nickel showed distinct changes in length and breadth of Escherichia coli isolate EC-Test as well as EC-Ref Escherichia coli ATCC 8739. In case of iron and chromium exposure the cells even tend to become filamentous at very high concentrations. newlineAs can be seen from the ANOVA analysis the oligodynamic action of all the first transition elements under study are fairly similar and the mean difference which is seen is only apparent and there is no significant difference among the metal ions by Newman-keuls comparison test. There is no significant difference in the oligodynamic action shown by the test and reference strain as can be seen from the student t test for comparison between the two strains. The exposure study reveals that both the test and reference strain tends to tolerate higher salt concentration of Vanadium, Chromium, Iron, Cobalt and Copper. newline newline |
