Abstract: Power quality has become a major concern to both electric utilities newlineand consumers Around the world billions of dollars have been wasted every newlineyear due to the ill effects of poor quality of power supply newlineIn many cases industries have their productivity indices foreseen by projects, newlinenot achieved due to power quality problems such as voltage sag swell newlineharmonic distortion reduction in power factor etc Generally this is caused newlineby incompatibility between the power supply system and the operational newlinerequirements of the modern equipments such as power electronic components newlinebased variable speed drives uninterrupted power supplies, switched mode newlinepower supplies etc The growing concern about power quality in this decade newlineis based essentially on the hypersensitivity to very short voltage deviations of newlinenew electronically controlled loads and its associated cost of disruption newlineSince 1990s there has been an increase of nonlinear loads in newlineParticular distributed loads such as computers printers fax machines newlinetelevision monitors and fluorescent lighting These loads create harmonics by newlinedrawing current in short pulses rather than in a sinusoidal manner newlineThese harmonics cause detrimental effects including communication newlineInterface loss of reliability increased operating costs equipment overheating newlinecapacitor failures and inaccurate power metering newline newline
