Abstract: newlineUnderstanding the common forces involved in the process of newlinestabilization of collagen irrespective of tanning molecules used is of profound newlineinterest In an attempt to define how skin attains stability when treated with newlinetanning agents issues related to the changes in thermal and enzymatic newlinestability chemical and physical properties of the skin protein have been newlineaddressed in the recent past and a unified theory of tanning has been newlineproposed In the present investigation the role of water structure and newlinehydration phenomena in the dimensional stability induced by tanning agents newlineand ligands to skin and leather has been studied Some novel experimental newlinetechniques have been deployed in this work for examining the role of water in newlineinfluencing the dimensional stability of collagen and leather newlineThe transverse relaxation time T2 of water contained in skin and newlineleather have been measured using NMR techniques with the objective of newlineunderstanding the role played by the dynamic structure of water in processes newlineleading to the stabilization of collagen Some new correlations have been newlineobserved between transverse relaxation times T2 for water protons in tanned newlinecollagen in wet and dry conditions Differences in the slopes for hydrolysable newlineand irreversible tanning processes can be interpreted in terms of desolvation newlineassociated with tannin efficacies newline newline
