Wireless network technology has evolved as an alternative to the existing wired newlinenetworks. Wireless networks can be divided into infrastructure dependent networks and newlineinfrastructure independent networks. The former requires centralized control in the form of newlinebase station to support communication, the later doesn t need any base point for its operation newlineand popularly known as wireless ad hoc networks. An ad hoc network is a group of newlineautocratic nodes that communicate with each other by making multihop network and newlinemaintaining the connectivity in a localized manner. The destination may be multiple hops newlinefrom source node in multihop network. Multihop wireless networks can be categorized into newlineMobile Ad hoc Networks (MANET), Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANET), Wireless newlineSensor Networks (WSN) and Wireless Mess Networks (WMN). newlineThe designs of routing protocols in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) have several newlinechallenges as the MANETs are resource constrained. The cross layer design optimization is newlineneeded to achieve the energy conservation. The cross layer optimization intends for newlineproviding the best solution form different layers in achieving the Quality of Service newlineparameters. The topology of the network can be controlled by transmission power of the newlinenode which also reduces the interference. Thus, it is possible to enhance the network newlineperformance parameters such as throughput and network lifetime. The requirement to newlineachieve reduced end to end delay conflicts with the energy consumption. This contradictory newlineissue and needed to be considered in the enhancement of the network lifetime. newlineThe Lifetime Enhancement Routing Protocol (LER) is proposed in MANET for selecting the newlineefficient path to the destination which uses residual power and drain rate as cost metric. The newlineLER protocol minimizes the node overutilization and provides load balancing.
