Abstract: Background and Purpose: Many studies have focused on short term observations of children’s motor development and very little is known about longitudinal motor development pattern even though literature recommends longitudinal study design to predict the rate of motor development. The Peabody Developmental Motor Scales-second edition (PDMS-2) is based on cross sectional normative data. Therefore change in pattern of motor development over a period of time on longitudinal pattern on this instrument is yet to be investigated. The purpose of this study was to analyse the rate of motor development of Mangalore-Urban children from birth (1-2 months) till 36 months of age on PDMS-2 (through subtests and quotients) and assess its (PDMS-2) applicability on longitudinal study sample (infants/children of Mangalore Urban Area) for same age ranges through percentile ranks (for subtests and quotients) and through age equivalents (for subtests only) in order to suggest the need for modification or standardisation of PDMS-2. Subjects: 42 normal infants without any post-natal or neonatal events and residing within limits of Mangalore City Corporation in the age range of 1-2 months and followed up till 36 months of age. Methodology: Purposive sampling. 3 monthly follow-up till 11 months of age and 6 monthly follow-up from ≥12 months of age till 36 months. Generalized estimating equation (GEE) with dunnet post hoc test to compare the profiles of raw scores across ages for subtests and quotients. Descriptive statistics of subtests raw scores and quotients scores were used to compute ‘z’-scores and ‘T’-scores which were transformed to motor ratings as defined in PDMS-2 examiners manual. 2-sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used to compare percentile rank distribution of study sample for subtests and quotients. Bland-Altman Plot and Scatter Plot were used to compare agreement between chronological age and age equivalents.
