Abstract: The present study deals with the effects of UV-B radiation mediated stress on selected newlinephysiological and biochemical processes of two N2-fixing heterocystous cyanobacteria newlinenamely Anabaena PCC 7120 and Anabaena sp. strain L31. The selection of above newlineAnabaena species was based mainly because of their fast growth, formation of newlinehomogeneous suspension in liquid medium and ability to form discrete colonies on solid newlineagar-agar medium. With a view to confirm their identity, both the species were newlinecharacterized employing morphological and molecular parameters. Their identification was newlinebased on the amplification of three genes (16S rRNA, Pca (phycocyanin) and nifH) newlinefollowed by sequencing of 16S rRNA. Before assessing the impact of UV-B stress on newlinevarious metabolic events, growth response of both Anabaena species was tested in a few newlinesynthetic media but BG-11 proved most suitable for growth newline
