Abstract: Soft clay deposits are geologically very young deposits widely newlinespread along the coastal plains all over the world These deposits pose a major newlineproblem to the geotechnical engineers because of their low shear strength and newlinehigh compressibility There are various techniques available for improving the newlineresponse of soft clays against the load to be applied on them One of these is newlinethe inclusion of crushed stones to form an array of stone columns under the newlinefoundation There are two beneficial effects that result from the presence of newlinethe columns of stone material First the stone column is stiffer and has higher newlinestrength than soft clay so the column shares a major part of the load applied newlineSecond the stone material of the column possesses a permeability manifold newlinehigher than the clay thus the column acts as a drain too The stone columns newlinereduce the length of the drainage path and accelerate the consolidation of soft newlineclay under the foundation loads newline newline
