Abstract: Since the advent of British rule and the newlineattainment of Independence the Indian society has been newlinegoing through a process of modernisation The British newlineopened the gates of higher education which hitherto reserved newlinefor the twice born castes for all irrespective of caste newlinecreed religion and sex After Independence India adopted newlinea pattern of society which embodies the values of newlinedemocracy socialism and secularism For example Article 16 1 newlineguarantees equality of opportunity or appointment to any newlineoffice under the State and Article 16 2 forbids discrimination newlinein respect of any employment of office under the State on newlinethe grounds only of religion race caste sex descent newlineplace of birth residence or anyone of them In short newlinemodern India has committed herself ideally to modernisation newlinein the sense of ensuring equal access to the structure of newlineopportunity to all citizens irrespective of religion caste newlineand sex However despite the acceptance of a socialistic newlinesociety based on principles of equality social background newlinein terms of religion caste sex social class and urban newlineresidence continues to influence the educational and newlineoccupational aspiratons of students in higher education newline
