Abstract: In the present research, out of total twenty seven isolated bacterial strains from the effluent samples of dairy, sugar and beverage industries, five most potent strains namely Pseudocitrobacter anthropi C138 (ISB1), Enterobacter (ISB4), Bacillus sp RKA-04 (ISD1), Citrobacter freundii LCJY-002 (ISD4) and Azotobacter vinelandii AAU11 (ISS1) were selected based on their growth in effluent and biochemical activity. They were found to be tolerant to wide ranges of temperature and pH. They were also able to withstand moderately high NaCl concentration. They had versatility in elaborating several hydrolases in addition to their nativity to effluent, and showed shorter generation time indicating their ability to multiply rapidly and degrade complex organic substances. These features promote their suitability as biotechnological tool for bioremediation. In the present investigation emphasis was also laid on the pollution removal efficiency of the resistant bacteria isolated from effluent samples as individual strain and mixed culture. It was inferred from the results that consortium of resistant bacterial strains were proved to be more effective in reducing selected physiochemical parameters of dairy effluents in comparison to individual strain culture of isolates. Further, the immobilization of the various set of consortium was done and the pollution removal efficiency of the immobilized consortium was studied in a lab scale effluent treatment plant. Out of all four prepared consortium (ISC 1, ISC 2, ISC 3 and ISC 4), ISC 1 was found to be the most effective in reduction of pollutants from dairy industry effluent. newline
