Abstract: This thesis presents a Ph.D research work on "Study and Development of Algorithms for Design of JIT Kanban Manufacturing System with Multi.product", The Just-In-Time manufacturing system brings lot of benefits not only to companies engaged in mass production system but also to the customers. Amongst various parameters which affect the performance of the JIT manufacturing system with multi-product, the determination of kanban sizes of the pans1 products such that the total cost is minimized plays a vital role in increasing its productivit). The JIT manufacturing system considered in this research consists of 3 parts1 products and 4 processes (workstations). In this research, three measures of performance viz, average cycle time (ACT), average percentage line utilizarion (ALL? and average work-in-process (AWIP) for the JIT manufacturing system with multi-product are analyzed and reported. A unique function for the total cost per period (To is constructed in this research. It is the sum of the total holding cost per period (x), total unutilized serial line cost per period (y) and total product changeover cost per period (z). The components of the total cost function are computed using the statistics, viz. mean cycle times of the parts1 processes (MCT,, i = 1,2, 3), mean percentage line utilizations of the processes (MLLi,, j = 1, 2, 3,4), mean work-in-process inventories of the parts (MWIP,, i = 1, 2, 3) and number of changeovers of the processes (A;) which are obtained using a simulation model. The stages of this research are as listed below.
