dc.description.abstractThe main aim of the research work elaborated in this thesis was to develop alternative synthetic routes to fused quinoline compounds and study of their various applications. The thesis is divided mainly into two parts preceded by a general introduction. First part describes various synthetic routes developed for synthesis of pyrrolo-/thieno-/furo- and oxazolo-quinolines and the second part looks at the application aspects of these compounds. newlineChapter I (Introduction, objective and materials and methods): This chapter gives a general introduction about various fused quinoline based systems already known in literature and also emphasizes on their biological importance. Main objective of this research work along with materials and methods is also mentioned in this chapter. newlineChapter II (Synthesis of 4-substituted pyrrolo[2,3-c]quinolines): Main emphasis here is the synthetic route developed for fused pyrrolo-quinoline compounds by using simple organic transformations. newlineChapter III (Synthesis of 4-substituted thieno/furo[2,3-c]quinolines): This chapter describes two step synthesis developed for the said compounds using Suzuki coupling and modified Pictet-Spengler approach. newlineChapter IV (Synthesis of 4-substituted oxazolo[4,5-c]quinoline/[1,8]naphthyridine): Work described in this chapter elaborates a new route developed for synthesis of these compounds without prior activation of unreactive C-4 position of oxazoles. newlineChapter V (Selective Zn2+ sensing by pyrrolo-quinolines): In this chapter we have looked at the application of synthesized molecules towards selective metal sensing. 4-(pyridin-2-yl)-3H-pyrrolo[2,3-c]quinoline (PPQ) was able to carry out ratiometric detection of Zn2+ even in the presence of Cd2+ and Hg2+. newlineChapter VI (Selective F- detection by 2-(3H-pyrrolo[2,3-c]quinolin-4-yl)phenol): Main emphasis of this chapter is on selective detection of fluoride ion and the critical role played by fused pyrrole ring.
