Abstract: In a developing country like India where the population has been growing steadily and a very large proportion of income is spent on food food grains supply hasnt been met with the rapid demand newlinegrowth The countrys average productivity of pulses has been significantly lower than the average yield in the world Because of the higher productivity of the major cereals like rice wheat and maize etc pulses are not in a position to compete them specifically in properly managed irrigated lands Deteriorating pulses production is slowly becoming a major threat due to increased focus of protein newlinebased food industries in the midst of ever improving socio demographics In this scenario minimizing newlinepostharvest storage loss of pulses is the most effective and economic ways of immediately increasing newlinepulses availability Heavy dosages of expensive pesticides are used to control the pulses damage but newlinetheir serious health hazards in the long run are completely ignored An indigenous practice of using botanicals in storage of pulses plays a vital role in preventing storage losses and maintains the keeping quality of pulses This study was designed to assess storage practices of pulses in selected households and to assess the keeping quality of selected pulses stored with different botanicals and impart training on the use of botanicals during storage Trial Experiment proved the effectiveness of Azadirachta newlineindica Neem Vitex nigundo Nochi and Pongamia pinnata Pongamia pulverized leaves to prevent losses of pulses during storage in various combinations It is also proved that the effect of these newlinebotanicals had a positive impact in the keeping quality of pulses over the long period The training programme helped the homemakers and shop keepers to improve their knowledge of storage practices leading to optimum saving of pulses and improved health stature
