Abstract: The rotational spectrum of the 12-8 band of the B3IIg - A3E+u transition of the N2 molecule has been studied in details. Relative intensity estimates of the rotational lines recorded experimentally in the above transition are used to obtain the experimental line strengths. These values along with the theoretical line strengths calculated from Kovacs1 formulae are used in the calculation of Einstein A coefficients. These results are used to determine the life times of the upper vibronic level. The mode of approach adopted in the present work in determin-ing the lifetime is different from that adopted by other workers in the field in that, the lifetime has been calculated using the intensity data obtained during the rotational analyses of the 12-8 band of the First Positive system. The correctness of this procedure has been checked using the intensity data of the 1-12 band of the b/1E+u - X 1E+g transition to calculate the lifetime of v = 1 level of the excited b/ state. A brief account of a number of studies done by different workers on various aspects of the excited states of B3II, A 3E and b/ E+u of the Nitrogen molecule, particularly the lifetime studies of B3II state, has been presented in the First Chapter. Also a brief account of the present work is given in this Introductory Chapter. The Second Chapter gives the details of the experimental setup to photograph and measure the spectrum of the 12-8 band of the First Positive System and the 1-12 band of the b/1E+u - X 1E+g transition. The Third Chapter is an account of the model used in determining the rotational energy levels and line frequences of the 12-8 band of the B3IIg - A3E+u transition. It gives the theory for the determination of the Einstein A coefficients and lifetimes of the rotational levels of the upper state of the 12-8 band of the B-A transition, using intensity data. The Fourth Chapter describes the rotational analysis of the 1-12 band of the b/1E+u - X 1E+g transition. It deals with the intensity analysis of the 1-12 band and the lifetime...
