Abstract: Air pollution causes several diseases, disorders and even deaths in not only humans but also in all forms of life that come in contact with such polluted air and its derivatives. The major effect is seen in people exposed directly to such pollutants, such as traffic policemen. Hence, the cytogenetic biomarkers such as Chromosomal Aberrations (CA), Micro-Nuclei (MN) and Single Cell Gel Agarose Electrophoresis (SAGE) or comet assay were performed in vitro in the peripheral blood lymphocytes. The results indicated that this is (a) Misrepair of CA leading to the preponderance of double minute (DM) chromosomes among CA, (b) Age dependent increase in MN frequency and (c) Ratio of Double Strand Breaks (DSBs) and Single Strand Breaks (SSBs) gives a good indication biomarkers at the genetic level arising due to air pollution. Thus this thesis evaluates the necessity, feasibility and applicability of biomarkers to air pollutants in an urban scenario such as the city of Tiruchirapalli.
