Title: Diversity and abundance of ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) along an elevational gradient in Jammu-Kashmir Himalaya

Abstract: The study was aimed to determine the diversity and abundance of ants along an elevational gradient in Jammu-Kashmir Himalaya. A total of 144 species represented by 45 genera and 8 subfamilies have been recorded. Out of the total 144 species, 3 species belonging to genus Myrmica are discovered as new to science and four species represent new record from India. To avoid methodological edge effects different sampling methods like pitfall traps, leaf litter sifting, stick beating, soil core, honey bait and hand picking were employed to sample ants. Climatic data was procured from local meteorological stations falling in the study area and was recorded at the study site as well. Data was analysed using Colwell EstimateS and Beta diversity indices. It has been observed that ant species richness increased with increase in elevation and peaked at mid-elevation and thereafter decreased with increase in elevation thus forming an mid elevation peak. The pattern observed could be attributed to the optimal climatic conditions present at that altitude. Moreover, the similiarty between two elevations was analysed by using Sorensen, Jaccard, Bray-Curtis and Morisita-Horn indices. All similarity indices indicate that elevations of 500 meters and 1000 meters are similar in community composition; similarly elevations of 2000 meters and 3000 meters share maximum number of species in common. Dissimilarity indices indicate that altitude of 500 meters and 1000 meters did not share even a single species in common with altitude of 4000 meters. The presence of invasive species at first three elevations clearly indicates the deteriorating health of the Himalayan ecosystem. Out of the one forty four species collected, first two elevations are dominated by Indo- Malayan elements, while above 2000m it is dominated by Palaearctic elements. 23% of the recorded fauna has been found to be endemic to this region. The study has found that Himalayan region possess rich, diverse and unique endemic ant fauna.
