Abstract: Salinity always exists in groundwater, but in variable amounts. In places where groundwater is being pumped from aquifers that are in hydraulic connection with the sea, the induced hydraulic gradients may cause the migration of salt-water from the sea toward the well. Present work aims at bringing clarity of spatial variability of two important variables viz. Static water level and salinity in the concerned area. Geostatistics method is used to find the spatial variability of SWL, EC and CL data. Kriging and Semivariogram analysis is done for getting Standard prediction surfaces of SWL, CL and EC. Standard prediction errors surfaces are also generated for accuracy check. From the prediction surfaces the area affected by sea water intrusion as well as lateral distance of sea water intrusion is found out. The villages affected by total salinity and partial salinity are also identified. In ground water prospect evaluation, the study aims to identify and delineate the ground water potential of costal area of Bhavanagar District of the State of Gujarat. The major part of the area is ephemerally drought prone and facing an acute water scarcity for drinking and agricultural purpose. The surface water resources in the area are inadequate to meet the needs and the ground water resources are also not properly explored. The information on lithology, geology, geomorphology, lineaments, drainage, Slope, land use/land cover is generated using the Resource sat (IRS P6 LISS III) data and Survey of India (SOI) toposheet of scale 1:50000 and integrated them with raster based Geographical Information System (GIS) to identify the ground water potential of the study area. Thus a GIS-based model which takes into account of local condition/variations is developed specifically for mapping ground water potential. On the basis of hydro-geo-morphology three categories of ground water potential zones namely good, moderate and limited are identified and delineated.
