Abstract: (2S,3S)-Tetrahydro-3-hydroxy-5-oxo-2,3-furandicarboxylica cid (Garcinia acid), a newlinenaturally occurring hydroxy acid, has been identified as a potential chiral precursor. newlineSimple procedure for the isolation of this compound from cheap natural sources have newlinebeen developed Complete spectroscopic data of the molecule has been made newlineavailable for the first time. Starting from (2S,3S)-Tetrahydro-3-hydroxy-5-0~0-2,3- newlinefurandicarboxyllc acid, ton hitherto unknown chiral synthons including 1,2-diols have newlinebeen prepared and character~sed. Asymmetric oxidations were performed to newlinedemonstrate the catalytic efficiency of novel 1.2-diol ligands.
