Abstract: Biological processes are eco friendly and sustainable alternatives to newlineconventional chemical processes for the production of several industrially newlineimportant bulk chemicals Currently the chemical industry is witnessing a newlineparadigm shift from petrochemical feedstock to renewable feedstock newlineGlycerol a surplus by product of the biodiesel industry holds promise as a newlinemajor feedstock for synthesis of numerous platform chemicals One such newlinechemical of special interest is 1 3 propanediol 1 3 PD It is a highperformance newlineingredient that can be formulated into a variety of industrial newlineproducts However 1 3 PD has special use in biomedical cosmetic and food newlineindustries and therefore it would be suitable to produce it in an organism with newlinewide acceptability like Lactobacillus reuteri The major bottleneck limiting newline1 3 PD production in L reuteri is growth inhibition by secreted metabolites newlineand toxic 3 hydroxypropionaldehyde 3 HPA In this work L reuteri has newlinebeen metabolically engineered for improving 1 3 PD production by the newlineexpression of a heterologous alcohol dehydrogenase yqhD that is known to newlineefficiently convert the precursor 3 HPA to 1 3 PD newlineThe impact of YqhD on productivity and metabolite formation newlineprofiles was assessed by batch bioreactor studies newline newline
