Abstract: newlineIncreasing demand for fuel economy easy maintenance coupled newlinewith good performance in automobile and space application call for materials newlineof light weight high strength weight ratio and with inherent resistance to newlineenvironmental hazards In this context the traditional metallic material is newlinebeing substituted by composite materials Composite basically consists of a newlinematrix material reinforced for any desired property by suitable reinforcement newlineObviously the reinforcement is of superior characteristics used in the form of newlineParticles fibers and whiskers Composite materials are categorized as newlinePolymeric metal matrix and ceramic matrix reinforced materials newlineFiber reinforced plastic consists of high strength and modulus newlineembedded in a plastic matrix with distinct interface between them In general newlinefibers are the load carrying members while the matrix keeps them in the newlinedesired location and orientation It acts as load transfer medium and protects newlinethem from environmental damage as well Polymeric matrices are thermo newlineplastics and thermosetting polymers Among the matrices thermoset plastics newlineexhibit enhanced strength characteristics However they are not recoverable newlineHence thermosetting polymers find new applications newline
