Abstract: Dental fluorosis occurs especially during the period of teeth development The aim of the study was to evaluate the fluorosis status in an endemically fluorosed district of Salem in Tamil Nadu and also to investigate the role of COL2 A 1 gene VNTR polymorphism in the susceptibility to dental fluorosis Prevalence of dental fluorosis among 4989 school children in Salem was done 300 extracted premolar teeth were collected from the patients with and without fluorosis who came for orthodontic correction The allelic ratio of DNA after isolation was subsequently determined for each marker by Gene marker software Dental fluorosis was present in 56 point 9 percentage of children The water fluoride level was found to be between 0 and 3 ppm Genotyping of the COL2A1 VNTR gene in the study population showed the presence of 6 alleles and revealed 15 genotype combinations This research represents the first published report of an association between a VNTR polymorphism of COL2 A1gene and differential susceptibility of dental fluorosis in humans These types of research will enable us to identify individuals at increased risk for dental fluorosis Dental fluorosis VNTR Genetic polymorphism Collagen COL2A1gene Fluoride level Variable number of Tandem repeats newline
