Abstract: In this research study, an automated system for assembly sequence generation and representation is developed. It automatically extracts information from CAD product files and then represents assembly sequences along with knowledge about probable simultaneous/sequential selection of assembly components and relative movement direction for each component with respect to other components with the help of graph termed as Hierarchical Directed Graph. The research study has been completed in four parts (1) A system is developed for automatically extracting the product features which are further used for interpreting spatial comparison in the form of Relationship Matrix, Complete Inclusion Matrix, Major Inclusion Matrix, and Overlap Matrix, (2)Extracted data and matrices are used along with some rules for component type realization and precedence relationship generation, (3) Different assembly configuration that can be commonly found in mechanical assemblies are identified and rules are integrated with them to make the system robust. (4) A rule based system is developed to represent assembly sequences along with knowledge about probable simultaneous/sequential selection of assembly components and component movement direction. newlineComputer programs are developed for extracting each part s spatial interaction, physical properties and spatial information from CAD file. The developed system uses the extracted data for generating relationship matrix, inclusion matrix, major overlap matrix and partial overlap matrix to establish the spatial relativity of the components with each other. By using product features and said matrices, system realizes the type of each component in three different categories i.e. main parts, connectors and secondary connectors. With the help of relationship information and component type realization, system generates precedence knowledge for assembly sequence planning. newlineConcept of component type realization is extended to identify different assembly configurations.
