Abstract: Chalcones having a hydroxyl group at the para position of the newlinephenyl ring and methoxy, dimethoxy trimethoxym fluoro and ethyl groups newlineat the ortho meta or para position and benzo substituent at the ipso newlineposition of the aromatic ring of styryl unit were prepared by reacting newline4 hydroxyacetophenone with 2 methoxybenzaldehyde 25dimethoxy newlineBenzaldehyde trimethoxybenzaldehyde fluorobenzaldehyde or newlineethylbenzaldehyde respectively in presence of sodium hydroxide in newlineethanol water mixture Similarly 1napthaldehyde with 4 hydroxy newlineacetophenone was reacted to get the corresponding chalcone newlineMonomers containing free radically polymerizable acrylate or newlinemethacrylate group and a photodimerizable chalcones were prepared by newlinereacting acryloyl or methacryloyl chloride with the 4 substituted hydroxyl newlinechalcone in the presence of triethylamine in methyl ethyl ketone newline newline
