Abstract: Cables and ropes of helically wound wires or fibres have wide engineering applications newlineThe ability of cables to support large tensile loads with comparatively small bending and torsional stiffness is their most significant property Apart from the axial loads, cables are often subjected to transverse loading In the field of cable modeling, many models have been proposed to describe the mechanical behavior of simple straight strands under axial newlineloading The equations for each model are presented in a standardised form for the linear case and the strand responses of these models are compared with the experimental findings available in the literature Critical influence of the stiffness constants and the assessment of the limitation of the analytical models are studied The comparison of the newlineresults of the available analytical models showed that Sathikh et al model apart from bringing the symmetry of the stiffness elements offered solutions closer to the experimental results Further it considered the wire bending and the torsional effects more appropriately Hence the Sathikh s model has been adopted as the basic model for theoretical work newline
