Abstract: The emphasis of the present study has been to explore the novels of newlineJean Rhys through individualistic perspective. The thesis was undertaken newlineto understand the theory of individualism and place of the novelist Jean newlineRhys in Caribbean literature. The exploration of the five novels of Jean newlineRhys has enlightened me on various aspects of the novelist Particular and newlineCaribbean literature in general. newlineThe study has provided me a fascinating and rewarding experience. newlineAll the five novels of Jean Rhys that are taken up for the study are newlineQuartet, After Leaving Mr. Mackenzie, Voyage in the Dark, Good newlineMidnight and Wide Sargasso Sea. newlineHence, this study seeks to examine the notions of individualism newlinepresent in the novels of Jean Rhys. The thesis contains a detail study of newlinetheory and development of individualism, history and development of newlineindividualism, history and development of Caribbean literature, newlinerheumatic concerns of major Caribbean writers, the depiction of life and newlinecareer of the novelist Jeans Rhys and exploration of individualism in her newlinenovels. newlineThe five novels under study focus on struggle in their life. The newlinenovelist stressed on the themes of up rootedness, migration expatriate newlinesensibility, alienation, disintegration, and struggle for identity. The newlinevii newlinenovelist explores individualist issues like autonomy, selfhood. The newlinenovelist focuses in all five novels the journey of the protagonist from loss newlinethrough disintegration towards construction of positive identity. The newlinepresent research tries to explore the presence of individualistic traits in newlinethe Rhysian heroines. newline
