Abstract: With recent advancements in Ultra High Voltage transmission systems, Gas Insulated Substations and Distributed Generation systems, there is an increasing concern towards a reliable power system for which good newlineinsulation coordination is essential. Voltage-time characteristics form the newlinebasis of insulation coordination. During insulation coordination, sufficient newlinesafety and protective margins are established between the voltage-time newlinecharacteristics of the equipment to be protected and the protective level of the newlineprotective device.Power transformer is the crucial equipment in the power system. newlineEven after proper insulation coordination, significant number of transformer newlinefailures are reported due to degradation of its insulation caused by service newlineaging and transient overvoltages. Among the transformer failures, winding newlineinsulation related failures are predominant. In the winding, inter-turn newlineinsulation is exposed to maximum electrical stress under transient newlineovervoltages compared to other winding insulation. Oil Impregnated Paper is newlinethe commonly used inter-turn insulation and the service life of the entire newlinetransformer depends upon the paper-oil quality.During service aging, Oil Impregnated Paper undergoes degradation due to thermal, dielectric, chemical and mechanical stresses.Degradation also occurs, when transformers are subjected to various types of newlinetransient overvoltages like lightning and switching overvoltages.
