Abstract: Previous research has highlighted the importance of bringing innovation in newlineNew Product Development NPD process to achieve success in the market but majority newlineof the research have considered innovation as an element within the NPD process The newlineintegration of innovation along with NPD process is particularly an underresearched newlinesubject in the overall NPD research field Most of the manufacturing organizations newlinestrongly believe that more emphasis on NPD is required to keep pace with rapidly newlinegrowing technology and increased global competitionBut our research shows that newlinefundamental issues related to innovative NPD are not yet properly researched keeping in newlinemind the unique needs ofthe developing world more so particularly in the Indian newlinemanufacturing industryHence this study aims to address the NPD best practices and newlineNPD innovation issues together ie innovative product development practices in the newlineIndian manufacturing industry newlineIn this research detailed literature review was carried out to understand the newlinecurrent status of NPD research in order to identify the research gaps and directions for newlinefuture research Literature review involved classification of 1127 research newlinearticlespublished during the 12 year period from 1998 to 2009 Of which 781 empirical newlinearticles were identified dealing with multiple objectives The results of these reviews newlinerevealed lacunas on several fronts covering NPD content and NPD empirical research newlineReview of different frameworks also exposed incoherent use of innovation in newlineNPDFurther in order to verify whether QFD constitutes innovative product newlinedevelopment process or not 127 QFD articles were benchmarked to identify the different newlinebest practices of QFD model However the best practices model only enhances the newlinecustomer involvement into the NPD process but there exists no evidence that it can be newlineused as innovative product development model Hence a survey was administered to newlineevaluate the reliability and validity of both NPD best practices and NPD innovation newlineconstructs to proposeinnovative product development IPD
