Abstract: The concept of Self Help Group SHG is the most exciting newlinediscovery in the field of poverty and unemployment reduction Problems newlinerelating to illiteracy lack of skills health care sustainable livelihoods cannot newlinebe solved individually in view of the fact that people are not organized and newlinemost of them are illiterates People from poor and marginalized strata of our newlinesociety informally join as a cohesive group to solve their individual problems newlinewith a holistic programme of self employment Their membership consists of newlinehomogeneous individuals and normally the size of the group is between 12 to newline20 members The important problem concerning the economically backward newlineclass is poverty and unemployment The poverty line divides the poor from newlinethe non poor Basic minimum things required are proper consumption levels newlineof food clothing shelter fuel and health care etc SHGs are expected to act newlineas a Catalyst reduce poverty and unemployment become the change newlineagent by improving the socio economic status of its members and by newlineinculcating the leadership abilities to them and create more and more newlinesuccessful individual entrepreneurs from the SHG beneficiaries But in the newlinereal scenario whether the SHGs are really living up to the above expectations newlineis a big question newline
