Abstract: In the present thesis we have studied reversible and quantum circuits. A new algorithm for optimization of quantum cost of classical reversible and quantum circuits has been proposed. The quantum costs obtained using the proposed algorithm is compared with the existing results. It is found that the algorithm produces optimal quantum cost in all the cases. We have emphasized on the fact that a gate count obtained using New gates cannot be used as a measure of circuit complexity in classical reversible circuit. Therefore, designing circuits from a standard gate library is important for implementation and comparison purpose. All the reversible circuits reported here are designed using NCT gate library and systematic protocol for comparison of circuits prepared in di_erent gate libraries have been developed. We have proposed a design for reversible 4-bit multiplier circuit having minimum number of garbage bits, optimal gate count and optimal quantum cost. We have also calculated the linear transistor cost of the proposed reversible multiplier. We have shown that the HNG, TSG and MKG gates proposed for designing of a component of multiplier circuit (Full Adder) are neither essential nor advantageous and many such 4-bit universal gates may be proposed which can also work as Full Adder. As example three such New gates have been presented here. We have proposed minimal sequential reversible circuits from NCT gate library.
