Abstract: Sustainable and renewable energy sources from hydropower, solar energy and newlinewind power are expected to relieve the heavy burdens on the current energy resources newlineand environmental concerns such as dramatic climate change and heavy CO2 newlineemission. To promote efficient utilization of these abundant and readily available newlinerenewable energy sources, the reliable electrochemical energy storage systems such as newlinerechargeable batteries, supercapacitors and fuel cells are purposely explored. Among newlinethe promising energy storage devices, electrochemical capacitors known as newlinesupercapacitors are emerging as an important energy technology. Supercapacitors can newlinedeliver orders of magnitude higher power density than rechargeable batteries and newlinestore much more energy than conventional dielectric capacitors. The advantages of newlinefast charge/discharge rates, long cycle life, high Coulombic efficiency, low newlinemaintenance cost and safe operation, supercapacitor offers versatile to powering newlinesolutions to various applications ranging from memory back-up systems to electric newlinevehicles and to large-scale in smart grids. newline
