Abstract: Atmospheric air is one of the most important gaseous insulating medium. Nonuniform electric fields are most generally encountered in practical electrical engineering. Existence of nonuniform and highly nonuniform electric fields can cause formation of corona discharges in gaseous insulation. The occurrence of corona can cause partial conducting paths and thereby deterioration of insulating properties of gaseous insulating medium. Extensive investigations - both theoretical and experimental are being pursued vigorously at National and International levels for better understanding of phenomena that can lead to improvements in design of insulation of equipments, apparatus and devices used in electrical engineering. Several researchers have carried out investigations on electrical field calculations in nonuniform and highly nonuniform fields. For analysis of corona behavior between point plane electrode geometries, knowledge of electric field variations in the entire interelectrode gap spacing to a good accuracy is essential.
