Abstract: Under deregulation and restructuring of power systems -system control, voltage control and regulation, management of reactive power, transmission losses etc have been unbundled from real power system and included as part of the ancillary services. In such a competitive environment, the maintenance of economical and reliable supply of power with the available transmission facilities is a real challenge. Transmission interconnections enable diversity of loads and reliability of power supply. Hence increasing transmission capacity is always preferred to a new generation source. But power systems become very complex to control. Complex and large power systems face large power transfers from excess generation areas to deficit areas through parallel paths and corridors and excess reactive power in other parts. Without any control the power flow is usually in the low impedance path, overloading that line thereby limiting power flow in higher impedance parallel lines.
