Abstract: Electric Power systems throughout the world are being restructured newlineto introduce competition among the market participants and bring several newlinecompetitive opportunities. In this environment the main service provided is newlinethe primary energy transaction which may be through pool transactions and/or newlinebilateral/multilateral transactions to satisfy the active power requirements of newlinethe consumers. These transactions have to be cleared by an impartial entity newlinecalled as Independent System Operator (ISO). Apart from this function the newlineISO has to provide/control a number of ancillary services. Two important newlinefrequency related ancillary services which an ISO has to perform in a newlinerestructured power system are (i) load following (ii) regulation. newlineThis thesis is mainly concerned with the design and performance newlineanalysis of market structure for these two frequency related ancillary services newlineand selection of a suitable controller with robust property. In this thesis, three newlinearea Charged cum Bilateral Structure framework is chosen for investigation. newlineSingle Auction power pool price based bidding structure is adopted for the newlineprovision of load following and regulation services through charged structure. newlineIn the bilateral structure, prices for the provision of load following service is newlinedecided by the participants. Performance analysis of the charged cum bilateral newlinestructure with conventional integral controller is carried out using ramp and newlinerandom load disturbance in one of the area. Simulated responses are taken newlineunder normal operating condition and under contract violation, which is a newlineserious problem in bilateral structure. It is observed from the responses, the newlineselected frequency related ancillary services providers adjust their output in newlineproportion to their offer quantities. A comprehensive payoff calculation newlineexercise is also carried out to determine the payoff to each service provider. newlineTo suggest a suitable robust controller for the charged-bilateral newlinestructure, dual mode and fuzzy logic newlinebased controllers are analysed in addition to the int
